A sex shop worker has used a blunt instrument to attack a knife-wielding bandit in Townsville.

The 65-year-old male shop assistant turned on the bandit, who tried to rob the shop about 10.30pm (AEST) on Tuesday.

Police told AAP the blunt instrument was not one of the shop's products.

The bandit fled the scene and remains on the run.
